Circles and Swing!

Aband(on)ed

From the idea that the self is not given to us, I think there is only one practical consequence: we have to create ourselves as a work of art.”
― Michel Foucault

Meet the local dance companies Danselaboratoriet & Danseteateret in a double bill consisting of two choreographic works, both oriented around a single object/material:

Danseteateret presents Circles and Swing! by Nønne Mai Svanholm – a work centered around a huge mirror ball based on alternating rotations, turns, circles and spirals, where change slowly emerges.

Danselaboratoriet shows Aband[on]ed by Ingeborg Dugstad Sanders – where exercise bands are used as a symbolic prop in the exploration of the embodied relationship between entrapment and freedom within the boundaries of society.

Circles and Swing!

A giant mirror ball hangs lifelessly from the ceiling, dangerously close to the floor. In the sparse lighting, the mirror ball is a dark entity, but when a single beam of light hits it, the floor, ceiling and walls are transformed into a starry sky where the mirror ball floats like a lonely planet in the universe. Young and old performers circulate around the sphere, while their distorted and fleeting movements are reflected in the surfaces of the mirrors and blend with the silhouettes of the audience. Slowly, the mirror ball changes character from being the center of the ritual and meditative walk to speeding through the air like a dangerous and potentially deadly projectile. The mirror ball, just like Foucault’s pendulum, shows the passage of time, the rotation of the earth, and puts the potential of life and resources into perspective.

Circles and Swing! is a new interpretation of the work Circuit (2016), which was Nønne Mai Svalholm’s first work in the Rethink Ageing/Rethink Choreography trilogy. Circuit was performed at BORA BORA – Dance & Visual Theater in Aarhus with a subsequent tour across Denmark. Circles and Swings! is performed by Danseteateret 55+ and four local professional dance artists.

I have long dreamt of collaborating with DansiT – Choreographic Center in Norway, because they have special insight and knowledge working with the elderly people and choreographic work. It has been a wonderful collaboration, and I am very much looking forward to the premiere.

Circles and Swings! is my first performance created with the desire for a more sustainable international touring. With this tour format, I want to create a deeper connection with local dancers and explore the artistic encounter across generations. At the same time, it is better for the climate that it is only me and the performance who travel on tour together. – Nønne Mai Svalholm

Aband(on)ed

From the idea that the self is not given to us, I think there is only one practical consequence: we have to create ourselves as a work of art.”
― Michel Foucault

Aband[on]ed takes inspiration from the idea of the human being and the body as a social construction, and is an investigation of the embodied relationship between captivity and freedom within the boundaries of society. Plastic exercise bands are used as a symbolic prop in the exploration of the theme.

Aband(on)ed is a re-staging of Ingeborg Dugstad Sanders’ final choreography project at LABAN in London in 2004.

Aband(on)ed has been “lying in a drawer” since my studies – as a work in progress with potential for further investigation. Finally I found this opportunity to pick it up and explore it again together with the wonderful dancers in the Dance Laboratory.

We have worked with the material in our weekly rehearsals in September and October, and now present a choreographic sketch consisting of a composition of solo work and group images. – Ingeborg Dugstad Sanders
